Inspiration by Beethoven Piano Sonata “Tempest” 3rd Movement

Tempest in Transformation

This painting emerged from my personal encounter with Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 17, “Tempest.” As I practiced the sonata, a vivid image repeatedly appeared in my mind: currents of wind, water, and energy spiraling through space.

At the center of the composition are two circular movements. The larger vortex, rendered in deep blues, greys, browns, and whites, evokes turbulent waters and powerful winds. It reflects the emotional intensity and inner struggle that I perceive in Beethoven’s music.

In contrast, the smaller spiral in the upper right glows with warm oranges, yellows, and greens. Although smaller in scale, it symbolizes hope, renewal, and light emerging from darkness. Rather than opposing the larger form, it seems to be gradually transforming it, suggesting a quiet process of healing and transcendence.

White sweeping marks flow around both spirals like waves, currents, or gusts of wind.

To create a sense of movement and vitality, I combined brushes with palette knives and even a toothbrush, allowing the paint to scatter, sweep, and vibrate across the canvas. The intention was not simply to depict a landscape, but to translate musical energy into visual form.

This work was also deeply influenced by my reading of Kandinsky and his concept of inner necessity. As Kandinsky wrote, true artistic creation arises from an inner impulse rather than external imitation. In this painting, I sought to work intentionally, allowing personal experience, musical inspiration, and emotional resonance to guide every gesture and color choice.

For me, Tempest in Transformation is ultimately about the movement from turmoil toward hope—the possibility that even the most powerful storms carry within them the seeds of renewal.
