Flowers in Mosaic
“Flowers in Mosaic” 80x80 cm. Acrylic + Modeling paste + Oil on canvass. Piano by Léa - Chopin Waltz #9
For this painting, I simply wanted to celebrate beautiful flowers.
I often find the background the most difficult part of a floral painting, so this time I decided not to approach it in the traditional way. Instead, I created a mosaic-like background, using blocks of color to frame the bouquet and help bring the flowers forward as the focal point.
I used a flower arrangement that I had made myself some time ago as a reference. It helped me study the details and individual character of the flowers, but I didn’t want to reproduce them realistically. As always, I was more interested in the overall composition, the rhythm of the shapes, and how the different flowers and leaves interact with one another.
I began the painting in acrylic, then added texture with modeling paste to give some of the flowers more dimension, and finally worked over them in oil.
I enjoyed experimenting with the contrast between the structured, geometric mosaic background and the more organic, freely shaped flowers. 🌸🌿🎨
